Intuitive Living ~ Getting Grounded

Hello and welcome to a new installment of my Intuitive Living series! This series of blogs was inspired by Sonia Choquette's "Trust Your Vibes" print and audio books. I learned and grew so much as a result of following through with the steps outlined in these programs, and would love to share those lessons with you, too!

Each week I will be posting a new blog talking about my journey and how the lessons in Sonia's books applied to me as well as a weekly practice that you can do along with me. Sound exciting? I hope so!!

Last week I gave you the mission to start checking in with your body. How did you do? Did you find areas where you weren't taking such great care of your body? Did you start to realize how many negative comments you made about your body? How it looks? How it works - or doesn't work? Did you become more aware of any attitudes you hold about your body?

As we move forward with this week's assignment, I have to stress again that the way in which we interact with our bodies is IMPORTANT! The way we care for them, the way we talk to and about them, and the way we exist in our bodies can mean the difference between being completely tuned in to your psychic, intuitive gifts and being completely turned off and tuned out!

One of the things I love about Sonia Choquette is that she talks a lot about Ego versus Spirit. Basically, your Ego Self is the fearful, negative, pessimistic part of yourself. It's the part of you that feels like you're in constant competition with other people. It's the part of you that tells you that you shouldn't try anything new because you will only fail. It's the part of you that believes that there isn't ever enough - not enough money, not enough time, not enough love, and so on. Quite literally, the Ego believes "It's you against me, and I am afraid of you." But your Spirit Self, your true self, is the exact opposite of that. Your Spirit is completely connected to God and the Universe. It knows that competition and lack is just an illusion. It knows that the only way to complete fulfillment in this life is to follow your bliss and to embrace those things that give you joy. Where the Ego resides in fear and separation, the Spirit says, "How are we alike? How can we work together? How can I connect to you?" Your Spirit knows that there is no such thing as competition because there is more than enough for everyone.

Your Ego Self resides entirely in your mind. It is the part of you that looks at fashion magazines and tells you that you will never measure up. It's the part of you that compares you to every other man or woman out there and finds you lacking. It's the part of you that seeks to disconnect you from your body and that talks you OUT of following your intuition. Your Ego Self is a fantastic rationalizer. It will tell you that your gut feelings are just indigestion, and that your intuitive feelings are just coincidence. If you let it, it will talk you out of ever claiming the gifts that are rightfully yours as a Divine child of God.

But your body is part of your Divine self. It is the Earthly seat of your very soul. And, because of this, it is one of the most accurate conveyors of your intuitive feelings. But, this system cannot work properly if you're not grounded. In order to fully connect with your intuitive gifts, you must first fully connect with your body!

So, how do you know if you're not grounded? Here are some of the signs:

- You are stuck in negative thinking about your body or your appearance
- You exaggerate all your problems, making oceans out of puddles and mountains out of molehills
- You worry constantly and obsess about everything that is lacking in your life - love, money, support, etc.
- You feel insecure and believe you are in constant competition with other people
- You are clumsy, tripping over your own feet, bumping into things, and having "silly accidents"
- You are restless, unsettled, or out of sorts - unable to sleep well or sit still and relax
- You are unable to focus or concentrate properly
- You spend a lot of energy doing things, but accomplish very little

When you are ungrounded, you will either become trapped in your own head or stuck in one place, spinning your wheels while accomplishing nothing. This is because you have cut yourself off both from the support of the Earth and your own Spirit, which you feel and gain access to through your body.

Even those of us who have been in spiritual practice for a long time admit to struggling with getting and staying grounded. It's so easy for life matters to take over and for us to forget this very basic practice. It's easy to move your energy up into your head and live your life through your mind instead of your body. For me, as someone who has had major body image issues for most of my life, I spent years and years living entirely in my head, ignoring that my body even existed.

So, how do you get grounded?

The first and easiest way to get grounded and back into your body is to do something physical that you enjoy. Some people really enjoy running, swimming, hiking, or shooting hoops at a local gym. For me, these activities are really difficult because they can bring up so many negative feelings and memories of torturing and punishing myself for not having the "right" body shape. I prefer slower, meditative exercise like yoga or Earthing (walking barefoot on the earth).

Other methods of grounding include sitting under a favorite tree, gardening or tending to growing things, going for a nature walk, dancing, or meditating.

This week I want you to continue writing in your journal, checking in with your body and writing down any fears that come up. I also want you to start making a daily habit out of grounding using any method that feels right to you. Notice any differences in the way you feel, in your energy level, in the way you interact with and feel about your body. Also, pay close attention to how getting grounded every day affects your intuition and thinking in general.

As always, I invite you to check back here and let me know how you're doing in the Comments section or by stopping by my Facebook page!
